Graphic Design Degrees
Graphic design can mean any number of artistic and professional disciplines that concentrate on visual communication and presentation. Several methods are available for creating and combining symbols, images and text into a visual representation of concepts and messages. Graphic design can mean both the process of by which the concept or message is created and the products which are generated. As a graphic designer you could your skills in several ways including magazines, advertisements and product packaging. Packaging for a product, for instance, might include a logo or another related sign, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and colors which are combined into one central idea or message.
The skills you learn as a graphic designer are applied whenever you do something as simple as draw a picture, paint a flower, print a letter or arrange those components into a coherent layout. Whenever we talk about graphic design, we often refer to that branch of the visual arts that is concerned with the aesthetics and production of layout, design and typography. The use of graphic elements and text to communicate a message or idea is the goal of every graphic designer.
With a degree in graphic design you will acquire the skills needed to add just the right message using images and text to a brochure, website and many other public relations and advertising media. You will be responsible for producing artistic representations, usually under the guidance of an art or creative director. Of course, nowadays, most graphic design is conducted on a computer using sophisticated software. You will need to master designing software in order to develop the overall layout and production design of everything from magazines, newspapers and journals, to business reports, and other advertisements. You will be able to produce promotional displays and marketing brochures for products and services, design distinctive logos for products and businesses, and develop signs and signage systems or environmental graphics.
