Architecture Degrees

Architecture is one of the greatest forms of self-expression. Learning how to design a building that complements the activities and functions of the people in it and around it is like learning how to paint or write a song. Like painting or music, architecture is a way for us to express ourselves to the world and to fulfill both the practical and expressive requirements of a civilized people. When we think about architecture, we tend to think about those designs and structures that are culturally significant and were created by famous individual architects. Architecture must satisfy its intended uses, must be technically sound, and must convey aesthetic meaning. But the best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They end up not only as beautiful works of art, but as a sign to the nature of the people and culture that produced them.

If you're fascinated by great buildings, famous architects, or how architecture has evolved over time, you might be the ideal candidate for a degree in architecture. As an architect, you will study the spatial relationships, arrangement and visual rhythm of the components in a structured environment like a hotel or a government building. You will be asked to respond to the functional requirements of a building by finding its place within the surrounding physical and social environment and making sure it meets the needs of the people that will live in it. With a degree in architecture you will learn how to prepare drawings, plans, specifications and other construction documentation. You will be responsible for using these documents while overseeing the construction of a building, observing the progress of the work, and processing the changes and even the payments. You will be able to provide design services related to planning, programming, interior design and post construction activities. As the primary design professional on a project, you will assume professional responsibility for coordinating all of the design decisions in the project.
